Madagascar has experienced frequent shifts between democratic and military rule. Following independence in 1960, the country oscillated through socialist, civilian, and transitional regimes. Since 2025, a military authority led by Col. Michael Randrianirina has governed under a transitional arrangement pending constitutional restoration.
