Tsavo West complements its eastern sibling with more varied terrain — rolling hills, lava fields, forests, and volcanic craters. Covering nearly 9,000 square kilometers, it offers both scenery and wildlife diversity on a grand scale. It’s also the more accessible and developed section of Tsavo, linked by roads from Mombasa and Amboseli.
The park’s highlights include the crystal-clear Mzima Springs, where hippos and fish thrive in filtered waters from Mount Kilimanjaro, and the Shetani Lava Flow — a stark black expanse born from ancient eruptions. Wildlife is abundant, though slightly more elusive due to dense vegetation. Expect elephants, buffalo, lions, leopards, and rhinos.
Tsavo West’s blend of geology, water, and wildlife makes it one of Kenya’s most photogenic parks. It’s ideal for explorers who value variety — a single day might include savannah, forest, lava, and mountain.
*Best time to visit: June – October for dry conditions and best game viewing.*
