Gombe Stream National Park

Gombe Stream National Park

Gombe Stream National Park, perched on the hills along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, is globally famous as the site of Jane Goodall’s pioneering chimpanzee studies. It’s a jewel of primate conservation, blending rugged terrain, misty forest, and the calm waters of Africa’s deepest lake.

Despite its small size, Gombe offers a truly intimate wilderness. Visitors trek through steep valleys to observe wild chimpanzees in their natural habitat, often within meters of the famous ‘Kasekela’ group studied since the 1960s.

*Fact: Gombe Stream is Tanzania’s oldest national park, gazetted in 1968 after years of research by Jane Goodall and her team.*

Why Go to Gombe

The park’s isolation and lake views make it one of East Africa’s most contemplative destinations.

Where to Go in Gombe

Gombe’s trails radiate from park headquarters, accessible only by boat from Kigoma. Each path climbs steep forested hills with breathtaking lake views.

When to Visit Gombe

The dry season is the best time for chimp tracking when paths are easier and chimps stay closer to shore. The green season offers lush scenery and quiet solitude.
