Boat sailing toward Kisite Marine Park

Coral reefs protect Turtles in Kisite

Wasini Island lies just off Kenya’s southern coast, opposite Shimoni village, and is one of the region’s most authentic and untouched marine destinations. The island is surrounded by the dazzling turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, offering panoramic views, coral reefs, and rich Swahili heritage. Unlike the more developed beaches of Diani or Malindi, Wasini remains charmingly local — a tranquil paradise where visitors can experience traditional dhow sailing, explore coral pathways, and witness everyday coastal life at its purest.

The highlight of any visit to Wasini is a dhow trip through the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, one of Kenya’s premier marine reserves. Here, travelers can snorkel or dive among vibrant coral gardens teeming with tropical fish, spot pods of dolphins gliding through clear blue water, and occasionally encounter sea turtles. Lunch is typically a Swahili seafood feast served at a local village restaurant, offering the perfect taste of coastal culture and cuisine.

Beyond its marine adventures, Wasini Island is deeply tied to community-based tourism and conservation. The Wasini Women’s Group Mangrove Boardwalk is a model of sustainable tourism — a serene trail built over mangrove forests where visitors can learn about marine ecology while supporting local livelihoods. With no vehicles, no noise, and only the sound of waves and dhow sails, Wasini embodies the essence of slow travel — peaceful, culturally rich, and naturally beautiful.

  • Best Time to Visit: December–March, July–October (dry season, best for snorkeling and dhow cruises)
  • Entry Fees: Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park fees – approx. USD 20–25 per person (paid at the Shimoni Marine Park gate before boarding the dhow)
